The Bolivarian Alliance for the Peoples of Our America - Peoples' Trade Agreement or ALBA-TCP (sometimes unofficially referred to by its initial name Bolivarian Alliance for the Americas or ALBA) is a regional international organisation, founded in 2004, formed by Latin American and Caribbean countries with an emphasis on the fight against poverty and social exclusion based on leftist doctrines.2

It is a project of political, social and economic collaboration and complementarity between some countries of the Americas and the Caribbean, initially promoted by Cuba and Venezuela as a counterpart to the FTAA (Free Trade Area of the Americas), promoted by the United States.

It is based on the creation of mechanisms that take advantage of the cooperative advantages between the different partner nations in order to compensate for the symmetries between these countries. This is done through the cooperation of compensatory funds, aimed at correcting the disabilities of the member countries, and the application of the TCP (Peoples' Trade Treaty).

ALBA-TCP gives priority to the relationship between the countries themselves for equality and the common good, based on sub-regional dialogue and opening up fields of strategic alliances by fostering consensus and agreement among Latin American nations.

The Secretary General is Bolivian diplomat Sacha Llorenti appointed on 14 December 2020 following the departure of David Choquehuanca, who resigned to run for the vice-presidency in Bolivia's 2020 General Elections, where he won with his running mate Luis Arce Catacora.

On 23 August 2018, Ecuador declared its exit from ALBA, because it disagreed with the measures of the government of Nicolás Maduro regarding the exodus of millions of Venezuelans due to the crisis in that country.

On 15 November 2019, following the political crisis that triggered mobilisations by some civilian sectors, leading to the forced resignation of President Evo Morales, Bolivia also announced its exit from ALBA,3 to rejoin on 20 November 2020 with the return to power of the Movement Towards Socialism.4
