The Socialist Workers' Party of Germany (SAP) was a socialist party in the German Empire. It was formed in 1875 from the merger of the Social Democratic Workers' Party (SDAP) and the General German Workers' Association (ADAV). Its history between 1878 and 1889 was marked by the effects of the German Socialist Law. After its end, the party renamed itself the Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD) in 1890, as it is still known today.
